:510:
1388 - Bad Lieutenant (1992) - 5/10 - Harvey Keitel stars as a scumbag cop who drinks and does drugs while on the job. The movie is pretty aimless and I couldn't really get into it.

:5510:
1389 - Calling Homicide (1956) - 5.5/10 - The police investigate a car bombing and the murder a woman who owned a modeling agency, eventually realizing that the two cases might be linked. The acting isn't all that great and the story is only mildly interesting at times.

:710:
1390 - Criminal Court (1946) - 7/10 - Tom Conway stars as an attorney known for his stunts in the courtroom. He accidentally kills a mob boss, but his girlfriend is the one who gets charged for murder. Some of the courtroom theatrics were kind of ridiculous, but this is a fun, quick movie.

:7510:
1391 - Strangers in the Night (1944) - 7.5/10 - A soldier returns home after being injured during the war. One thing that kept him going during his time overseas was his pen-pal correspondence with a woman named Rosemary Blake. He sets off for her hometown in order to meet her, but finds that she is not home and something seems off about her mother's home. This is a nice briskly paced film that is pretty entertaining.

:7510:
1392 - The Marvels (2023) - 7.5/10 - Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, and Monica Rambeau team up after their powers get entangled. They take on the leader of the Kree who is trying to steal resources from various planets. The villain is kind of thinly developed and the story itself seems rather simple and underdeveloped, yet I still had a lot of fun watching the film. The three leads are fun (especially Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan) and their interplay is enjoyable.

:5510:
1393 - Circumstantial Evidence (1945) - 5.5/10 - A hothead goes after a shopkeeper who stopped the hothead's son from breaking down and stealing crates from his alley. The shopkeeper dies and the hothead ends up in jail on a murder charge, though claims that the shopkeeper fell and hit his head in an accident. I didn't like the characters of the father and the son, finding each one irritating in their own manner. The rest of the characters and story weren't all that great either, though were better than the unrelated 1935 film of the same name.

:5510:
1394 - Story of a Love Affair (1950) - 5.5/10 - A wealthy man hires a detective to look into his wife's past after finding some old photographs from before their marriage. The detective's investigation leads to the wife becoming reacquainted with an old friend and starting an affair with him. I found most things in the film to be rather dull and uninteresting.

:6510:
1395 - The Bride Wore Black (1968) - 6.5/10 - A woman is stopped from committing suicide so instead, she sets out on a quest for revenge to kill the five men who ruined her life.

:4510:
1396 - The Mysterious Mr. Valentine (1946) - 4.5/10 - The film starts with a woman getting a blowout and stopping at a nearby chemist's shop to use their phone. She then steals a car when the chemist's wife pops in to take a photo of her husband with his 'girlfriend'. There are a lot of things in this film that don't make a lot of sense. The story makes a number of leaps. The acting isn't very good, especially for the private detective character.

:5510:
1397 - Unmasked (1950) - 5.5/10 - A crooked newspaper editor has been borrowing money from the woman he has been sleeping with, the wife of a wealthy man. The husband takes away her jewels and leaves town so that she can't give the editor any more money. The editor sees this as an opportunity to kill the woman and frame the husband. It wasn't great, but it was watchable.

:7510:
1398 - Whispering Footsteps (1943) - 7.5/10 - People in a small town start getting suspicious of a bank teller whose face resembles the sketch made of a murderer who has been strangling women in towns not all that far from where they live. Even people in his rooming house and some who have known him for many years are not immune, except for one woman who has been friends with him since childhood. This is pretty short, but felt like a fairly well realized and complete film which I ended up enjoying quite a bit.

:710:
1399 - Among the Living (1941) - 7/10 - John Raden returns home after the death of his father. He discovers that his twin brother Paul is still alive and had been kept under wraps in a secret room for the past 25 years. Paul has bouts of insanity where he is capable of killing others and his father colluded with the local doctor to fake Paul's death when he was 10 years old. Paul gets loose and tries to set up a life for himself in town, wondering at all that was kept from him for so many years, but his murderous streak comes out eventually and John may take the blame.

:610:
1400 - The Turin Horse (2011) - 6/10 - A farmer, his daughter, and an abused horse struggle to survive during a fierce windstorm. It's Tarr so you pretty much know what to expect - nice cinematography and a fairly monotonous story, including plenty of images of eating potatoes.

:710:
1401 - Conan the Destroyer (1984) - 7/10 - This isn't a great film and doesn't really fit my view of Conan, but as a fantasy adventure film, it's fairly fun and entertaining. Plus it has Grace Jones.

:710:
1402 - Margaret (2011) - 7/10 - A spoiled and rich high school student (Anna Paquin in a nice performance) is involved in a bus accident that kills a woman. This affects her emotionally and we see that play out at times over the course of the film. It's a decent film.

:510:
1403 - Apology for Murder (1945) - 5/10 - A reporter is talked into helping the wife of a wealthy man to kill him so that she can inherit his money. Another man ends up in jail for the murder and the reporter feels guilty about that. It's not a great film, but I did like the ending.

:7510:
1404 - Armed Car Robbery (1950) - 7.5/10 - A group of criminals plan a clever armed car heist. Things go well at first, except for a police car with two detectives who happen to be close by. When one of the detectives is killed in a shootout, his partner is hot on the trail of the criminals responsible. Fast moving and entertaining.

:610:
1405 - Backlash (1947) - 6/10 - The film has a complicated plot with an escaped prisoner, a lawyer who may have been murdered after the escape, the lawyer's wife who may have been trying to poison her husband, and so on. Police detectives are on the case and try to sift through the various clues and stories to see what is really going on.

:710:
1406 - Behind Green Lights (1946) - 7/10 - When the body of a crooked private investigator is found in his car with bullet holes in it, the main suspect is Janet Bradley, the daughter of a man running for mayor. There is evidence tying her to the crime, but she pleads her innocences and tells her side of the story. There are a few twists and turns in this entertaining hour long noir.

:710:
1407 - Behind Locked Doors (1948) - 7/10 - A reporter convinces a private investigator to go undercover at a private sanitarium. She thinks that a crooked judge is hiding out there and wants the PI to find out if that's true. She'll act as his wife and liaison to the outside world and they can split the reward. Conditions inside the facility are not optimal for safety, though. Tor Johnson makes an appearance here as an insane former boxer.

:610:
1408 - Bewitched (1945) - 6/10 - A young woman starts hearing a voice in her head which represents a different personality. At the urging of the voice, she leaves behind her family and boyfriend in their small town and builds a new life for herself in the city. She finds another love interest in a prominent attorney, but her alter ego spoils things and threatens to make it even worse. It's not bad and there are some decent performances, but it could have been better.

:5510:
1409 - Blackmail (1947) - 5.5/10 - A smart talking detective gets hired by a rich businessman who is being blackmailed. Before long, murder is added to the mix. I found the detective's patter annoying. It probably was faithful to the source material (pulps), but it didn't translate as well to film.

:7510:
1410 - Blind Alley (1939) - 7.5/10 - A gangster who escaped from prison is on the run with members of his gang. They arrive at a lakefront home and take a psychology professor and his family/guests hostage while waiting for a boat to arrive. The film has good atmosphere and characters.

:7510:
1411 - Bodyguard (1948) - 7.5/10 - A police detective (Lawrence Tierney) has problems with his boss and leaves the force. He is approached by a man who wants to hire him as a bodyguard for his aunt, the owner of a large meat packing facility. He initially refuses, but is drawn into the situation anyway and is later framed for a murder. While evading the police, he sets out to solve the murder he was framed for along with the problems at the meat packing facility. He is aided by his fiancée (Priscilla Lane) who is the secretary for his former lieutenant. I liked both Tierney and Lane here.

:6510:
1412 - Bury Me Dead (1947) - 6.5/10 - June Lockhart stars as a wealthy woman who arrives home from a trip to find that she is thought dead in a stable fire. She attends her own funeral with her face covered, wanting to investigate and find out who was trying to kill her before going to the police. There are a number of suspects, including her husband, the woman who who was raised as her sister, a boxer that she was seeing, and the woman that her husband was seeing. The film is fairly average, but I enjoyed it.

:510:
1413 - Chinatown at Midnight (1949) - 5/10 - The theft of valuable Chinese objects to sell through an antique shop sparks an investigation which later turns into a murder investigation. The police are on the hunt for the killer, who also happens to be suffering from malaria. It's a fairly boring film.

:510:
1414 - Dangerous Intruder (1945) - 5/10 - A female hitchhiker is hit by a car. The man brings her into his home to recuperate and his family treats her well, especially the young daughter. Then the mother dies and the hitchhiker decides to investigate because she thinks something funny is going on. Not really a very interesting film for the most part.

:610:
1415 - Destiny (1944) - 6/10 - Cliff Banks can't catch a break. He's wanted by the police for a crime that he didn't commit. He's been trying to live life the right way, but circumstances dictate his getting into trouble. Then his girlfriend betrays him for the reward and he goes on the run. He ends up on a farm with a blind girl who seems to have some influence or power over nature.

:7510:
1416 - Delisin (1975) - 7.5/10 - A man dies and it is rumored that he left behind a hidden fortune somewhere. Several man band together to search, tearing apart a number of places in their efforts. The son of the man who died is a photographer and he moves to the town shortly thereafter. He falls for a high school girl whose photograph he takes while on a job. However, she happens to be the daughter of one of the men searching for the fortune. The town also comes to believe that the man's umbrella has positive powers of karma. The movie is fun and pretty entertaining, especially after the introduction of the love interest 1/3 of the way through the film.

:610:
1417 - Abbas in Flower (1982) - 6/10 - Abbas works for Sakir, who drives a minibus. Abbas hopes to have his own minibus and be able to make money so that he can marry the girl he loves. However, Sakir also plans to marry the girl, even though she doesn't love him, and is willing to resort to dirty tricks to sabotage Abbas. It was better than I expected and not bad overall. The ending was predictable, but still fun.

:8510:
1418 - Van Gogh (1991) - 8.5/10 - The film details the last couple of months in the life of Vincent van Gogh. In 1890, he comes under the care of Dr. Gachet and spends quite a bit of time with his family. We see some of van Gogh's paintings in progress, but the film is more about the man and his relationships in the time leading up to his suicide. It's well done and pretty entertaining.

:710:
1419 - The BeastMaster (1982) - 7/10 - A boy is ripped from his mother's womb to be sacrificed in order to avert a prophecy, but is saved by a man who raises him as his son. The boy turns out to have the power to befriend and influence animals. He uses these abilities to protect others and look for revenge. It's about what I was expecting and was pretty entertaining.

:610:
1420 - Black Belt Jones (1974) - 6/10 - Jones was a secret agent who now runs a karate school. When some businessmen want the property to redevelop it, they hire a local thug and his gang to put pressure on Jones and his school. The acting isn't all that great, but there are some interesting scenes.

:710:
1421 - The Trial (1962) - 7/10 - Anthony Perkins stars as a man who wakes up to find men in his apartment who question him and eventually tell him that he is under arrest, but won't detail what he is charged with. It's a pretty claustrophobic atmosphere and the film is shot very well, but I didn't really enjoy the film all that much.

:7510:
1422 - La Once (2014) - 7.5/10 - The director filmed her grandmother and her grandmother's friends over a period of five years. The ladies have been friends since high school and still meet regularly for tea. The topics of their conversation are pretty wide ranging - marriage, sexuality, football, aging, and much more. They enjoy nice food and also plan trips that they are going to take together. Over the years, their numbers dwindle due to illness and death. It's a pretty nice film.

:710:
1423 - Escape in the Fog (1945) - 7/10 - A nurse has a very realistic dream where she witnesses a man being murdered. After she wakes, she meets the man that she saw getting killed and he turns out to be a federal agent. They start a relationship, but circumstances seem to be leading to a repeat of her dream. Short, but pretty solid.

:610:
1424 - Fall Guy (1947) - 6/10 - A man wakes up in a hospital bed with police wanting to know why he has a knife that is covered in blood. The man was drugged and has vague memories of the previous evening, including finding a dead body in a closet. He escapes and then tries to find out what actually happened and if he did indeed kill the girl.

:610:
1425 - Fear (1946) - 6/10 - A medical student has money problems with his scholarship being canceled and not having the money for his rent. He gets a bit of money from a professor who has a sideline as a pawnbroker, but needs more and may need to take more extreme measures.

:710:
1426 - Follow Me Quietly (1949) - 7/10 - The police are on the trial of a serial killer known as 'The Judge' who kills people on rainy nights. A detective lieutenant is in charge of the investigation and receives some aid from a female reporter trying to get a story, but with insights into the evidence.

:610:
1427 - Following (1998) - 6/10 - A writer who is currently stuck follows random people on the street hoping for inspiration. One day, a man he is following confronts him. It turns out that the man is a thief and he draws the writer into his world of breaking into people's homes. The film isn't bad for what it is, but I didn't really got drawn into it until the last 10-15 minutes.

:710:
1428 - Moscow Laughs (1934) - 7/10 - This early Soviet musical comedy features a shepherd who is an amateur musician as well. He gets mistaken for a famous musician/conductor and this leads to a few opportunities. There are a number of scenes which are pretty funny, including one with birds on a wire where the shepherd plays them as musical notes. It gets pretty silly at times, but overall is fairly enjoyable.

:810:
1429 - Carnival Night (1956) - 8/10 - A New Year's Eve party is planned at the Economics Institute with a lot of singing, a jazz band, a magician, and other fun acts. The new director arrives and wants to replace this with boring speeches and no fun whatsoever. The organizers of the show do what they can to circumvent the director and keep him from spoiling the fun. This would not have been out of place as a Hollywood production of the time and I thought it was fun and entertaining.

:710:
1430 - Kidnapping, Caucasian Style (1967) - 7/10 - Shurik is traveling around on a donkey, collecting traditional toasts and speeches. He meets and falls for Nina, an attractive and popular young woman. A wealthy local also has an interest in Nina and tricks Shurik into helping kidnap Nina in an attempt to marry him. The first half is kind of boring, but it picks up quite a bit during the second half. The humor is often of the slapstick variety.

:710:
1431 - Walking the Streets of Moscow (1964) - 7/10 - A young writer from Siberia arrives in Moscow for a short visit. He makes a friend shortly after arriving and the tow hang out for the next day, helping a friend who wants to get married, going to a concert, walking the streets of Moscow, and so on. It's a pretty lighthearted film.

:7510:
1432 - Moon Warriors (1992) - 7.5/10 - A fisherman with excellent kung fu abilities rescues a deposed emperor from an attack masterminded by his brother. He takes the emperor to his village to recover and they become friends, but even his village isn't safe from the emperor's brother. There is a lot of nice kung fu action here plus a few romantic elements.

:6510:
1433 - Footsteps in the Night (1957) - 6.5/10 - A man is found dead in a hotel room. The chief suspect is another resident of the hotel and has fled the scene, but the detective in charge thinks that another man may be responsible. This is a decent police procedural.

:8510:
1434 - Cape Fear (1962) - 8.5/10 - Max Cady is released from prison after an eight year term for rape. He's out for revenge on attorney Sam Bowden and his family. Bowden was the witness who got him convicted. Cady stalks the Bowden family, but does so in a way that stays within the letter of the law. The remake was good, but I liked this one a little bit more.

:710:
1435 - The House Across the Lake (1954) - 7/10 - A writer befriends a wealthy man and his wife who live across the lake from him. The wife is a seductress who likes having men fall for her and do her bidding. She becomes worried when she discovers that her husband plans to cut her out of his will.

:7510:
1436 - Hunt the Man Down (1950) - 7.5/10 - A dish washer saves a woman from a thief and gets his picture in the paper. It turns out that he was on trial for murder 12 years earlier, but escaped. He gets a new trial with a public defender to defend him. He claims that he is innocent of the murder and the public defender sets out to prove it.

:5510:
1437 - Inner Sanctum (1948) - 5.5/10 - A woman riding on a train meets an interesting old man who seems to know what is going to happen slightly before it occurs. He entertains her with a story about a man who kills a woman and then hides out in a small town. The film is serviceable enough, but kind of boring.

:610:
1438 - Inside Job (1946) - 6/10 - An ex-con trying to go straight has a job at a department store. When an old associate shows up and threatens to expose him if he doesn't rob the department store's payroll, he decides to pull the job and keep the money for himself and his wife.

:610:
1439 - Showdown in Little Tokyo (1991) - 6/10 - Dolph Lundgren and Brandon Lee team up as police officers who are skilled in martial arts. They are looking to take down the yakuza who are shaking down businesses and have a methamphetamine racket going. The leader of the yakuza also has history with Lundgren's character. It's not a particularly good film, but it's certainly watchable and the chemistry between the two leads is decent.

:810:
1440 - El Mariachi (1992) - 8/10 - A young mariachi player travels through a town with his guitar case trying to find work so that he can earn a living and do what he loves. Unfortunately for him, there is a killer who recently escaped from jail traveling around town with a guitar case full of weapons and the mariachi player is mistaken for the killer by the drug lord's men who want him out of the way. A very entertaining film.

:710:
1441 - Duel to the Death (1983) - 7/10 - During the 16th Century, the champion swordsman of China is set to face off against the champion from Japan in a duel that is held every 10 years. However, the fighters discover that there is a plot to rig the fight. The two fighters are honorable and friendly toward one another, though they still plan to go on with the duel for their nation's honor. We get ninja and plenty of wuxia action.

:810:
1442 - Anand (1971) - 8/10 - A doctor is being celebrated for his new novel. He then tells the audience how the book is about a real man and the story unfolds from there. Anand has a rare form of cancer which leaves him around 6 months to live. He is determined to stay active and keep a sunny outlook, bringing happiness to those around him even as he gets closer to dying. The doctor finds himself affected in a number of ways by Anand. Nice performances and a pretty good movie.

:6510:
1443 - Bhuvan Shome (1969) - 6.5/10 - Bhuvan Shome is a strict boss and very set in his ways. He decides to go on a hunting trip, though he has no experience. While on the trip, he meets a teenage girl named Gouri who befriends him and helps him change his ways. The film is a lot better and more interesting in the scenes with Gouri than in those without her.

:7510:
1444 - Do Bigha Zamin (1953) - 7.5/10 - A wealthy businessman/moneylender wants to collect on a debt owed by a local farmer by taking the farmer's land. The court gives the farmer three months to repay the money owed so he goes to the city to try and earn enough to save his land. He finds that it isn't any easier in the city. It's a pretty good film.

:710:
1445 - The Chess Players (1977) - 7/10 - A fairly slow moving tale about the East India Company annexation of the kingdom of Awadh in India in 1856. We also have two nobles who are so obsessed with playing chess with each other that they ignore the political situation around them. It wasn't bad.

:310:
1446 - Quei Loro Incontri (2006) - 3/10 - Five sections with two static actors reciting dialogue to each other. Dull as dishwater.

:510:
1447 - Paradise (2014) - 5/10 - There is a ton of narration which isn't really very interesting at all. The images, though, aren't bad, though.

:810:
1448 - The Trial of Joan of Arc (1962) - 8/10 - A pretty pared down, but good version of Joan of Arc's trial, apparently based on actual court transcripts. The actress who played Joan did a nice job.

1449 - Intruder in the Dust (1949) - 8/10 - In 1940s Mississippi, a black man is found holding a gun and standing over the body of a white man who was just shot. It's up to a lawyer, two teenage boys, and an old woman to prove his innocence and keep him away from the lynch mob.

:7510:
1450 - Jeopardy (1953) - 7.5/10 - A family is on vacation in Mexico when an accident leaves the husband trapped under a timber on a deserted beach with the tide coming in. The wife (Barbara Stanwyck) goes for help, but runs into problems along the way.

1451- Journey Into Fear (1943) - 5/10 - An American working in Turkey is informed that Nazi agents are after him. He is quickly ushered onto a ship that is supposed to take him out of danger, but may actually put him in more danger thanks to the other passengers on the trip. The film is a bit of a mess, though that is likely intentional in some ways to get you to feel the confusion felt by the protagonist. I didn't really enjoy the film that much.

:710:
1452 - Key Witness (1947) - 7/10 - The plot of this film is kind of ridiculous, but is still entertaining. Much of the story is told in flashback after a hobo is in an accident and ends up in the hospital. Milton Higby is an amateur inventor who is stuck in an office job where he is picked on by the boss and hasn't had a raise in years. He is something of a milquetoast at home as well. His whole demeanor changes when he hits it big at the races one day and this sets off a chain of event that sees him hit the road.

:5510:
1453 - Marilyn / Roadhouse Girl (1953) - 5.5/10 - A garage owner is pretty controlling with his younger wife and with his business. His wife wants nice things, but finds it hard to get out from his domineering presence. When the newly hired mechanic steps in to protect her from her husband, everything changes.

:710:
1454 - My Name is Julia Ross (1945) - 7/10 - A woman applies for a job as a secretary for an elderly woman and wakes up to find that she has been drugged and transported far from London. She is kept prisoner in a mansion and they try to convince her that she is the wife of the elderly woman's son and has had a nervous breakdown. She works to escape or get word out for help.

:7510:
1455 - Night Editor (1946) - 7.5/10 - A group of men are playing poker and one of the men relates a story about a police detective who witnesses a murder, but doesn't come forward about it since he was cheating on his wife with another woman at the time. This leads to further complications along the way. It's a pretty good film.

:7510:
1456 - No Man's Woman (1955) - 7.5/10 - A woman refuses to give her husband a divorce unless she pays him a huge settlement which would necessitate his selling off part of his business. She has at least one man on the side that she is using for her own purposes and intentionally tries to seduce her assistant's fiancé. She seems to enjoy making trouble for everyone. When she is murdered one night, there is a long list of suspects. Very entertaining.

1457 - Open Secret (1948) - 7.5/10 - A landlady checks on a photographer who lives in her building, but he seems to be on edge. He gets a call from an old army buddy who is on his honeymoon and wants to crash at the photographer's apartment and visit as well. Then he gets a second call which isn't as pleasant. When the army buddy shows up at the apartment, his friend is nowhere to be found. Another good noir.

1458 - Panique (1946) - 8/10 - Monsieur Hire is a middle aged loner who has lived in the local hotel several years. He isn't particularly sociable or well liked. When a woman is found strangled in a lot on the day the carnival arrives, suspicion eventually falls on Monsieur Hire with mob mentality setting in, fanned along by the real killer. This is a very nice French noir.

1459 - Happiness (1998) - 4/10 - This wasn't really my type of humor.

1460 - En pizza i Jordbro (1994) - 7/10 - This is the fifth in a series of compilation films for a project with similarities to the Up series. In 1972, Rainer Hartleb started interviewing and following a group of elementary students. The films follow the kids as they grow up and they are now in their 20s in this film. There are plenty of flashbacks to earlier films in the series. I liked it, but probably would have gotten more out of it if I had seen the earlier films, though this appears to be the only one available with English subs.

:610:
1461 - All About My Father (2002) - 6/10 - The filmmaker tries to get to know his father a bit more and come to terms with his father being a transvestite. It was okay, but not really all that interesting.

:7510:
1462 - Børning (2014) - 7.5/10 - Roy has a souped up Mustang and likes to race it against others. His ex-wife drops off their teenage daughter just before a big street race and he mostly ignores her and wants her to stay out of the way. After the street race, Roy ends up agreeing to take part in a long race from Oslo to the North Cape. The movie was mediocre early on, but I thought it got better as it progressed and I liked the ending?

:610:
1463 - Bizim Aile (1975) - 6/10 - A widower with four kids and a widow with three kids get married after neighbors think that they would be a good match. All of the kids are adults, except for one annoying boy, and they don't get along with each other, at least at first. Further trouble comes in because one of the sons has a girlfriend whose father is wealthy, influential, and controlling. He doesn't want his daughter to associate with the young man and uses his influence with the police and elsewhere to get revenge.

:6510:
1464 - Kizilirmak Karakoyun (1967) - 6.5/10 - A shepherd and a chief's daughter are in love and want to marry, but custom is against it. The shepherd is given a difficult task to complete to win approval of the marriage, but a wealthy and powerful rival for her hand has his own ideas. The film is dated, but decent enough.

:510:
1465 - Süt Kardesler (1976) - 5/10 - There were a couple of bits on the ship at the beginning that I thought were kind of funny. After that, it was mostly just dumb, though I've seen worse.
