:810:
1222 - Toys in the Attic (2009) - 8/10 - What if Toy Story was fairly dark and done with stop motion? We get a pretty good sense of the answer with this film. It was a bit weird, but I liked it.

:5510:
1223 - Born to Kill (1947) - 5.5/10 - Sam Wilde (Lawrence Tierney) is a killer who gets what he wants and doesn't like anyone trying to take what is his, including his girlfriend. He becomes involved with Helen Brent (Claire Trevor) after murdering his girlfriend and her other boyfriend. I didn't really enjoy this one.

:810:
1224 - Kansas City Confidential (1952) - 8/10 - Joe Rolfe (John Payne) is an ex-con who gets framed for a robbery that netted over a million dollars. He's questioned and roughed up by the police before being let go. He decides to solve the case himself and track down the people who framed him. This one was much more up my alley.

:7510:
1225 - Phantom Lady (1944) - 7.5/10 - Scott Henderson (Alan Curtis) goes to a bar after a fight with his wife and ends up going to a show with a mysterious woman who seems to have troubles of her own. Henderson's wife was murdered while he was out and no one seems to remember the woman that he was with. Ella Raines does a nice job as Henderson's secretary who is convinced of his innocence.

:710:
1226 - Road House (1948) - 7/10 - A night club owner (Richard Widmark) hires a singer/piano player (Ida Lupino). He falls for her, but she falls for the manager of the club (Cornel Wilde). Widmark makes a pretty good villain.

:710:
1227 - The Blue Gardenia (1953) - 7/10 - Norah (Anne Baxter) is upset when she learns that her boyfriend is going to marry somebody else. She goes out on a date with a guy, gets drunk and passes out, waking the next morning to find him dead. It becomes a big newspaper story in addition to a police investigation. This was good, though it did seem a bit tame.

:610:
1228 - The Prowler (1951) - 6/10 - A woman (Evelyn Hayes) reports a prowler outside of her home. One of the policemen who responds (Van Heflin) takes an interest in her and arranges to see her again even though she is married. Van Heflin gives a good performance, but I didn't really buy their relationship.

:5510:
1229 - Where Danger Lives (1950) - 5.5/10 - A doctor looks in on a mentally unstable patient who might be suicidal and ends up falling for her and her lies. Robert Mitchum gave a decent performance, but I was pretty bored with the film.

1230 - Yellow Submarine (1968) - 6.5/10 - I'm a Beatles fan and I loved the music. Unfortunately, I didn't like the movie all that much.

:7510:
1231 - Watership Down (1978) - 7.5/10 - A group of rabbits leave their warren in search of new home when their current home is threatened by development. The vicious leader of their original home wants to stop the 'traitors'. I've never read the book, but this was decent.

:710:
1232 - A Midsummer Night's Dream (1959) - 7/10 - I've never really been a fan of the story, but the puppet animation was pretty cool.

:7510:
1233 - Allegro non troppo (1976) - 7.5/10 - This parody of Fantasia is pretty funny at times. My favorite part, though, was the Bolero segment, partly because I love the song and partly due to the animation in that segment.

:710:
1234 - Animal Farm (1954) - 7/10 - This seems like a decent adaptation of the novel, though it has been nearly 40 years since I read the book. It does seem to lack some of the bite that I remember from when I read it.

:810:
1235 - April and the Extraordinary World (2015) - 8/10 - In this steampunk world, scientific advancement was essentially halted in the 19th Century as scientists disappear. In 1941, a girl named April is still searching for her scientist parents who disappeared a decade earlier. This was fun and had the feel of a number of European graphic novels that I've read over the years.

:610:
1236 - Fritz the Cat (1972) - 6/10 - Lots of drugs, free love, and so on in this adult animated film. I was enjoying the film early on, but it got less interesting as it went on.

:710:
1237 - Hoppity Goes to Town (1941) - 7/10 - The bug community is threatened by human development. One shady bug is trying to get the bee's daughter to marry him, but she only has eyes for Hoppity. who is just returning from a trip. This wasn't anything spectacular, but was fun.

:710:
1238 - Idiots and Angels (2008) - 7/10 - A man spends a lot of time hanging out at a bar and being mean to people. Then one day he starts to grow wings. He initially wants to get rid of them, but then finds them useful. However, they seem to have a mind of their own. I didn't really enjoy this one much until he got the wings, then it got better. Overall it wasn't bad.

:710:
1239 - Invention for Destruction (1958) - 7/10 - I thought this film was more interesting for its visual style than for the actual story. The film is based on the works of Jules Verne and mixes live action with drawings and animation which use illustrations from the original novels as inspiration.

:810:
1240 - Nezha Conquers the Dragon King (1979) - 8/10 - A nice adaptation of a story from Chinese mythology. Prince Nezha is born inside a lotus blossom after a 3.5 year pregnancy. He is born able to walk and talk and soon becomes the student of a legendary teacher. The dragons are acting up and causing problems, but Nezha intervenes.

:710:
1241 - Rocks in My Pocket (2014) - 7/10 - The film details the lives and struggles with mental illness of a number of women in the director/narrator's family in Latvia under Soviet rule. I generally liked it, though I thought it went on too long even though the runtime is only about 90 minutes.

:810:
1242 - Sita Sings the Blues (2008) - 8/10 - Nina relates the story of Sita, Rama's wife in Hindu mythology, along with an autobiographical story with some parallels. The film uses 1920s musical recordings along with a contemporary discussion about Sita and Rama mixed with a variety of animation styles. I thought it was pretty lively and enjoyable.

:8510:
1243 - Tower (2016) - 8.5/10 - An excellent documentary about the University of Texas Tower shooting on August 1, 1966 which features archival footage, rotoscope animation, and contemporary interviews.

:710:
1244 - The Congress (2013) - 7/10 - Robin Wright stars as an aging actress with two kids who gets one final job offer. The movie is half live action and half animated and I started to enjoy the film more once it became animated.

:7510:
1245 - The Thief and the Cobbler (1993) - 7.5/10 - The unfinished film by Richard Williams features nice art and a decent story in an Arabian Nights type of setting. Too bad he never got to finish the film the way that he envisioned.

:810:
1246 - Son of the White Mare (1981) - 8/10 - This film is based on Hungarian myths and has an excellent visual style and animation. It took me longer to warm to the story, but I eventually found that interesting as well.

:810:
1247 - Summer Wars (2009) - 8/10 - Kenji is a high school math whiz who spends much of his time in an online world known as OZ. He does a favor for a girl in his school and accompanies her to a family gathering for her great-grandmother's 90th birthday. There is family drama before he gets drawn into a problem revolving around OZ. I read and enjoyed the manga nearly a decade ago and don't know why it took me so long to watch the movie. I thought it was pretty good.

:7510:
1248 - The King and the Mockingbird (1980) - 7.5/10 - A cruel king reigns over the kingdom of Takicardia. He likes to shoot at birds, but is cross-eyed and doesn't have good aim. He is frequently taunted by a mockingbird. One night, paintings of a shepherdess, a chimney sweep, and the king come to life. This king decides that the shepherdess should be his wife. The palace complex is pretty cool and I liked the animation style, even if it is a mix of 1950s and later since it took 30 years to complete.

:6510:
1249 - Vampire Hunter D (1985) - 6.5/10 - A young woman is bitten by a vampire and engages a vampire hunter to hunt down the vampire before she turns completely. It was okay, but I thought Bloodlust was a little better.

:810:
1250 - Gilda (1946) - 8/10 - Johnny Farrell (Glenn Ford) is a small time gambler who gets a job working for the owner of a casino in Argentina. Then one day the boss returns home from a trip with a new wife named Gilda (Rita Hayworth) who happens to be Johnny's old flame. It is soon apparent that Johnny and Gilda hate each other. Ford and Hayworth are each pretty good here and while I wouldn't rank this as one of the very best noirs, it's pretty solid.

:910:
1251 - Stray Dog (1949) - 9/10 - A rookie detective has his gun stolen from him by a pickpocket. He becomes obsessed with getting it back and is partnered with a veteran detective to track it down. Kurosawa does a great job establishing mood and building tension. We also get a look at postwar Tokyo, including it's seedier side. It's a very nice film.

:7510:
1252 - Nightmare Alley (1947) - 7.5/10 - Tyrone Power does a nice job in the lead role here. I liked it about the same as the remake.

:7510:
1253 - Beavis and Butt-Head Do America (1996) - 7.5/10 - I've never watched the tv show, though having lived through the 1990s, I am familiar with the characters. The movie is pretty stupid, but also funny. I can't say that it inspired me to seek out the tv series, but I did enjoy the film.

1254 - Coonskin (1975) - 4/10 - Ralph Bakshi's film didn't do much for me.

:610:
1255 - Fire and Ice (1983) - 6/10 - A rather generic fantasy film from Bakshi and Frank Frazetta. It was okay, but there were a number of things that didn't really make sense. The characters and world weren't fully realized.

:710:
1256 - The Lord of the Rings (1978) - 7/10 - This is clearly abridged and I wasn't a big fan of some of the rotoscope animation used here, but overall I did enjoy the film. Too bad Bakshi never made the second part.

:7510:
1257 - The Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Movie (1979) - 7.5/10 - This is mostly just old Looney Tunes cartoons stitched together with Bugs Bunny narrating a framing story, but I like these cartoons so I enjoyed it, even though I had seen all of them before at some point.

:6510:
1258 - Gay Purr-ee (1962) - 6.5/10 - A cat gets tired of farm life and heads to Paris in the 1890s where she falls under the influence of a disreputable local cat. Her boyfriend travels to Paris with his sidekick to find her and has a series of adventures. The film is somewhat entertaining and has songs with Judy Garland so that's a plus, but it feels very dated and the story isn't anything special.

:7510:
1259 - Metropolis (2001) - 7.5/10 - A detective and his nephew arrive in Metropolis from Japan looking for a criminal scientist. They find themselves in the midst of conspiracies and a potential uprising. The film is based on the manga by Osamu Tezuka which itself was inspired by the movie of the same name. I read the manga nearly 20 years ago so I don't know how good an adaptation the film is, but it matches pretty well with what I do remember and is pretty entertaining with nice visuals and a decent story

:810:
1260 - The Plague Dogs (1982) - 8/10 - Two dogs escape from a research facility and struggle to survive in the countryside while also eluding the search teams that are after them. The film is pretty serious and bleak, but is also very good.

:7510:
1261 - The Adventures of Mark Twain (1985) - 7.5/10 - Mark Twain decides to take a big flying airship up through space to meet Halley's Comet. Becky Thatcher, Huckleberry Finn, and Tom Sawyer accompany him on his journey. I thought that this claymation film was fun. That airship would be cool to travel on.

:7510:
1262 - The Last Unicorn (1982) - 7.5/10 - A unicorn learns that she is the last of her kind in the world. She sets out to find out the truth behind this, gaining a couple of companions along the way. I tried reading the novel once, but didn't get very far. I enjoyed the music and liked the character designs and backgrounds. The story wan't bad and I may give the book another try some day.

:510:
1263 - The Transformers: The Movie (1986) - 5/10 - If the Transformers cartoon had aired on Saturday mornings during the 1970s, I probably would have watched it. Since it first aired when I was in high school, I didn't have much interest in the show and never watched it, though it was impossible not to be aware of it due to the tons of ads for the cartoon and toys. I did like the later live action movie, even if they aren't great films. This cartoon has good background music and a few interesting bits, but mostly seems to be neverending battles between robots and wasn't that interesting overall.

:810:
1264 - When the Wind Blows (1986) - 8/10 - An elderly British couple follows government pamphlets in preparing for a possible nuclear war which the news says may come in only a few days. They think it will be like WWII which they have fond memories of, not realizing the altered nature of war atomic weapons bring. The couple is charming, though this isn't exactly a happy film. It does have a nice soundtrack.

:5510:
1265 - Appleseed (2004) - 5.5/10 - I enjoyed the manga when I read it back in the late 80s/early 90s so I thought that I'd likely enjoy this film. However, the animation isn't really very good and the story wasn't all that engaging. There were elements that weren't bad, but overall I don't think the film is very good.

:810:
1266 - The Dog of Flanders (1997) - 8/10 - Nello is a poor Flemish boy in 19th Century Antwerp who lives with his grandfather and likes to draw. His best friend is a girl named Alois who comes from a wealthy family, but whose father doesn't want her to associate with Nello. This is a nice adaptation of the classic story with good art and voice acting.

:710:
1267 - Dallos (1983) - 7/10 - Residents of the moon in the 22nd Century fight against oppression from Earth. I thought the animation here was decent and the story wasn't bad, though leaving Dallos unexplained would have worked better had the series continued where they could explore the mysteries surrounding it. As it stands, it is almost a MacGuffin, though it did play an important part during one action.

:7510:
1268 - Border Incident (1949) - 7.5/10 - A Mexican agent and an American agent go undercover in an operation to try and stop the smuggling of workers across the border into the United States. Ricardo Montalban stars as one of the agents.

:810:
1269 - High Sierra (1941) - 8/10 - Humphrey Bogart stars as a man who gets an early release from a prison in Indiana. He heads west and takes part in a jewel theft at a resort. Ida Lupino costars as the lone female member of the gang that robs the resort. Bogart's character shows a softer side at times and is not one dimensional. There's a fair amount of action and good scenery as well.

:7510:
1270 - While the City Sleeps (1956) - 7.5/10 - A serial killer called 'The Lipstick Killer' is preying on women. Reporters are working hard to get the story and beat their competition to the punch. One reporter baits a trap to try and catch the killer. The film got bogged down a couple of times, but overall was pretty good.

:810:
1271 - Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes (2020) - 8/10 - This low budget sci-fi film takes place at a cafe where people discover that two monitors are connected, but are two minutes apart so one is two minutes in the past and the other is two minutes in the future, depending on your perspective. The repetition of scenes from different points of view could have gotten pretty old, but fortunately they mostly moved on from that. It was well acted and funny.

:510:
1272 - Just Don’t Think I’ll Scream (2019) - 5/10 - A man moves to a remote village after breaking up with his partner and spends the next six months watching movies and fighting depression. The film is made up entirely of clips from the movies he watched. I found the endless narration to be pretty monotonous. It is obvious that a lot of work went into assembling the clips and many of these were interesting in how they were ordered. I might have rated the film higher if it simply had a soundtrack and no narration.

:6510:
1273 - A Wind Named Amnesia (1990) - 6.5/10 - Some sort of event passes through the world and gives almost everybody total amnesia. Water is a young man who is able to relearn many things with the help of someone who did not lose all of their memories and he travels across the U.S. to fulfill a promise. This wasn’t bad, though I started to lose interest during the second half of the film.

1274 - Robot Carnival (1987) - 7/10 - An anthology film with a variety of stories with robots. Some were better than others and my favorites were the opening and closing segments which tied together plus the robot battle in Meiji Era Japan.

:7510:
1275 - Act of Violence (1948) - 7.5/10 - Frank is a local hero who survived being a POW during WWII. Now somebody from his past shows up and threatens his happy and comfortable life. I thought this was pretty good.

:810:
1276 - Black Panther; Wakanda Forever (2022) - 8/10 - King T'Challa has died from a sudden illness and his sister Shuri has difficulty overcoming her grief. The outside world is hungry for vibranium and stirs up trouble with a previously unknown undersea nation. I thought Letitia Wright was excellent and the film did a good job dealing with the changes necessary from Chadwick Boseman's death. I didn't like Namor's appearance when I first heard of it, but I thought it worked pretty well here.

:610:
1277 - Dragon Ball Z: Broly – The Legendary Super Saiyan (1993) - 6/10 - I enjoyed the Dragon Ball manga, but have never watched any of the anime. This had some good moments, but overall was just okay.

:710:
1278 - Fullmetal Alchemist the Movie: Conqueror of Shamballa (2005) - 7/10 - Edward Elric is lost in a parallel world's 1920s Germany. His younger brother Alphonse searches for a way to bring him back. Edward befriends the parallel world's Alphonse as well as a gypsy girl. I loved the manga series and this movie was good, too.

:710:
1279 - Space Firebird (1980) - 7/10 - In the distant future, a boy named Godo is raised from birth by machines. He is given a robot companion named Olga at a young age. He is later trained as a pilot and sent out to find the legendary Space Firebird which may be able to heal the dying Earth. My favorite part of the film was the opening segment which showed Godo growing up with no dialogue in that section. The film was a bit inconsistent, but there were other fun parts later on during the search for the Firebird.

:510:
1280 - Golgo 13: The Professional (1983) - 5/10 - This is based on a manga series that has been running since 1968 and has over 200 volumes. I enjoyed the short series Viz published in the early 1990s and the later 13 volume 'best of' collection that they published. I think that it works better in print, though. Unfortunately, this film about an assassin for hire wasn't very good.

:810:
1281 - Roujin Z (1991) - 8/10 - The Ministry of Public Welfare chooses an elderly widower to test their new robotic bed which is supposed to provide all the care that a bedridden patient needs. However, he doesn't like it and the student nurse who cared for him previously sets out to help him, but things spiral out of control. There is plenty of humor and action and I thought it was a lot of fun.

Tusalava (1929) (10 minutes)
Voyage en Boscavie (1958) (9 minutes)
Don Kihot (1961) (10 minutes)
Hair Piece: A Film for Nappyheaded People (1984) (9 minutes)
Passing Days (1969) (10 minutes)
The Story of Menstruation (1946) (10 minutes)
The Red Book (1994) (11 minutes)
Bluebeard (1936) (13 minutes)

:5510:
1282 - Adoration (2019) - 5.5/10 - Paul's mother works at a psychiatric hospital. He falls for a teenage patient named Gloria who is suffering from mental illness. He helps her escape and they go on the run with him almost totally under her spell. The girl who played Gloria was fairly convincing, but I thought the boy who played Paul was not very good and I couldn't get into the story much at all. It seemed rather tedious at times.

:5510:
1283 - Angel Face (1953) - 5.5/10 - Robert Mitchum stars as an ambulance driver who takes a job as a chauffeur for a wealthy, but unstable heiress (Jean Simmons). When her father and stepmother die, suspicion is cast on the two of them. Simmons was interesting, but Mitchum and the story were not.

:7510:
1284 - On Dangerous Ground (1951) - 7.5/10 - Robert Ryan stars as an angry city cop who has a habit of beating witnesses and suspects. He is sent away from the city to the mountains to help with a manhunt for the killer of a girl. He ends up partnering with the even angrier and out of control father of the victim. Ida Lupino costars as a woman that they encounter in a remote home during the search. The film has pretty good performances and was enjoyable.

:6510:
1285 - Wicked City (1987) - 6.5/10 - It's time for a new peace treaty between the human world and the demon world so two cops, Taki (a human) and Maki (a demon) are assigned to protect an important diplomat and escort him to the peace negotiations. However, a group of demons want to see the peace talks fail. There were a number of things in the movie that I liked, including the ending, but it did get a bit weird at times.

:810:
1286 - I Wake Up Screaming (1941) - 8/10 - A sports promoter (Victor Mature) is a prime suspect in the death of an actress named Vicky (Carole Landis) that he helped promote on a bet with a newspaper friend. The movie flashes back to how he met Vicky and also proceeds in the present as he gets to know Vicky's sister (Betty Grable). Meanwhile, a detective continues to hound the promoter even after he is released from custody. I thought this one was lots of fun. Laird Cregar makes a good foil as the detective who isn't afraid to break a few laws.

:810:
1287 - Patlabor: The Movie (1989) - 8/10 - Some sort of malfunction is causing Labor robots to go haywire, even if they are unmanned. Members of the police whose own Labor robots are unaffected so far investigate the malfunctions and try to find the reason and a way to stop them. The film has a nice story and sort of fits into the police procedural category as well.

:810:
1288 - Patlabor 2: The Movie (1993) - 8/10 - This movie is much more serious and political than the first entry in the series. In this film, Tokyo is the target of terrorist acts which include blowing up bridges and other activities. Blame is assigned to a rogue air force jet, but there is more to it than that and the police unit from the first film tries to track down the culprit. This is probably a better film than the first one in a number of ways, but I liked the first film more.

:610:
1289 - New Order (2020) - 6/10 - Protests and civic unrest lead to members of the military (?) kidnapping people, brutalizing them, and asking for ransom from their families. Checkpoints, curfews, and martial law are set up. I thought the first half of the movie was good, but the film ended up not really going anywhere. It ended up as a bit of a confusing mess with me wondering what the point of it was.

1290 - Barefoot Gen (1983) - 8.5/10 - The film depicts the life of Gen, a boy living in Hiroshima with his family in 1945. The first part shows their family life before the atomic bomb is dropped and then we see the effects of the bomb and the aftermath. It's very well done. I read the first two Barefoot Gen manga volumes (based on the experiences of the author) back in the late 1980s. I read through all 10 volumes in 2010 after the translation into English was finally completed. It is a very good series.

1291 - Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone (2007) - 7.5/10 - A good remake of the beginning of the NGE anime series.

:810:
1292 - Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade (1999) - 8/10 - A member of a counter-terrorism group freezes when a girl carrying a bomb decides to commit suicide rather than being captured. He is disturbed by this and later becomes close with a young woman who may be the sister of the girl who died. There are plots within plots in this alternate history tale and it is a pretty good film.

:710:
1293 - Macross: Do You Remember Love? (1984) - 7/10 - I first became aware of Robotech through the Comico comics in the mid-80s. That first issue was pretty hot with the success of the tv series. I stopped buying Robotech comics for a while in the late 90s, but bought each of the more recent series. Tis film was decent (and familiar of course), though I still prefer the comics and the original tv version which are less compressed than a movie is forced to be.

:7510:
1294 - Macross Plus: Movie Edition (1995) - 7.5/10 - This takes place a few decades after the original series and features two rival pilots whose animosity dates back to high school and a girl that they both liked. Their rivalry turns to violence more than once. I thought it was good.

:6510:
1295 - Panda and the Magic Serpent (1958) - 6.5/10 - A young man and a snake goddess turned human fall in love with each other, but a wizard believes that she is evil. This was the first full length anime in color and it is okay.

:810:
1296 - The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (2006) - 8/10 - A 17 year old girl named Makoto discovers that she has the ability to leap through time. At first, she uses the ability to enjoy life and make things better for her. She eventually learns that the ability can be a bit more serious than what she has been using it for. The film is a sequel to a novel from the 1960s. I haven't read that book, though I did read the manga adaptation back in 2008. This film was better than the manga, though.

1297 - Black Angel (1946) - 7.5/10 - A woman is murdered and an innocent man is convicted and sentenced to death. The man's wife and the husband of the dead woman team up to try and find the real killer. Nice performances from Dan Duryea and June Vincent and a good film, too.

:710:
1298 - Call Northside 777 (1948) - 7/10 - James Stewart stars as a newspaper reporter who does a human interest story on a cleaning woman who saved up $5000 to offer as a reward for information that could clear her son who was convicted of killing a cop 11 years earlier. Stewart looks into the case, but doesn't believe the man is innocent, though he gradually comes around. This is based on a true story and is a nice film.

1299 - Dead Reckoning (1947) - 7.5/10 - Humphrey Bogart stars as a paratrooper who goes in search of his fellow paratrooper who deserted while on the way to a medal ceremony in Washington, D.C. He tracks his friend down and tries to unravel his secret past. A pretty decent film that costars Lizabeth Scott.

:8510:
1300 - A Letter to Momo (2011) - 8.5/10 - An 11 year old girl moves to a small island with her mother after the death of her father. She's rather reserved, but starts to come out of her shell when she befriends three goblins who are also inhabiting her home. I thought this one was very nicely done.
