:810:
430 - Welcome, or No Trespassing (1964) - 8/10 - The film takes place at a Young Pioneers summer camp for kids. Kostja is a bit of a rule breaker and the head of the camp kicks him out and escorts him to the train station to head home for swimming in the wrong place. Kostja decides to stay, though, and sneaks back into the camp. The other kids help him stay hidden and avoid discovery while plenty of hijinx ensue. It's a pretty funny and entertaining film.

:6510:
431 - Bound (1996) - 6.5/10 - Two women come up with a plot to steal millions of dollars in mob money. I was pretty bored with the film during the first half, but it picked up after that and the second half was more entertaining.

:6510:
432 - King of New York (1990) - 6.5/10 - Christopher Walken stars as a man just out of prison who looks to take out the competition and rebuild his criminal empire. The film started fairly well, but was kind of inconsistent.

:710:
433 - Miami Blues (1990) - 7/10 - Alec Baldwin stars as a man just out of prison (that sounds so familiar) who travels to Miami to start over. He starts a crime spree that includes robbing other criminals, impersonating a police officer, and so on. He also hooks up with a young prostitute (Jennifer Jason Leigh) who has dreams of making a home with him. It's off beat and fairly entertaining.

:7510:
434 - Wild Things (1998) - 7.5/10 - A high school guidance counselor is accused of rape by two students. His life basically seems to be over, but there are plenty of twists and turns ahead in this unashamedly trashy film. It's certainly plenty of fun along the way.

:910:
435 - Poetry (2010) - 9/10 - A 66 year old woman is diagnosed as being in the early stages of Alzheimer's. She lives with her teenage grandson, but he isn't very well behaved or appreciative. She also becomes interested in poetry and starts attending classes at the community center. She works hard at writing a poem, but it doesn't come easy to her. Yoon Jeong-hee was very good in this.

:610:
436 - Decision to Leave (2022) - 6/10 - A man dies from a fall off of a mountain, but was it an accident, murder, or suicide? A detective looks into the case and starts to suspect the much younger wife of having committed murder. He also finds himself becoming enamored with her. I thought I was going to enjoy this film a lot more than I did. It looks nice, but the way the story was told didn't really work all that well for me.

:710:
437 - Buffalo '66 (1998) - 7/10 - Vincent Gallo stars as Billy, a guy who is just out of jail. His first big challenge is finding a bathroom that he can use. He kidnaps a teenage girl named Layla (Christina Ricci) to take home to meet his parents, pretending that she is his wife. Billy is a bit socially awkward, the reasons for which are fairly clear after meeting his parents. Gallo and Ricci each did a nice job and I liked this more than I thought I would early in the film.

:610:
438 - Pusher (1996) - 6/10 - A drug dealer runs into problems when a deal goes bad and he ends up owing a lot of money that he can't cover. I may just not have been in the mood for this, but I didn't enjoy it all that much.

:6510:
439 - The Mission (1999) - 6.5/10 - A mob boss barely escapes assassination so five bodyguards are gathered to protect him at all times. The film has a decent soundtrack and tons of gunplay, though little to no character development. It's not bad, but there isn't really that much to the film.

:6510:
440 - Lovers / Amantes (1991) - 6.5/10 - A soldier just out of the army is engaged to his major's maid. While waiting to get married, he takes a room with a young widow and goes out looking for work. The widow is involved in some shady business and sets her sights on seducing the man. The film looks good, but I didn't enjoy the story much at all.

:7510:
441 - Ms .45 (1981) - 7.5/10 - A young mute woman is raped twice in one day. She obtains a gun and starts taking revenge on men who harass women, even going out looking for trouble at night. This is a well made revenge film. The idea is pretty simple, but Zoë Lund is good in the lead role.

:7510:
442 - Angae maeul (1983) - 7.5/10 - A young teacher leaves Seoul to take a position in a remote mountain village. She discovers that all of the people in the village are related to each other, except for one strange man who hangs around the village. There is an air of mystery and menace throughout the first half of the film as the teacher tries to figure out what the story is about the strange man and his role in the village. The second half of the film isn't quite as interesting, though it is still a good film.

:7510:
443 - Gaetmaeul / The Seaside Village (1965) - 7.5/10 - Hae-sun is a pretty young newlywed who lives in a seaside village. Her husband dies due to fierce storm during a fishing trip. Hae-sun joins the other widows in the village in their daily activities, but soon has to fend off the unwanted advances of her brother-in-law. This had pretty nice cinematography. The women in the film were more interesting characters than the men.

:7510:
444 - Sin Alley (1957) - 7.5/10 - A young man has moved to the city to get away from life in the country. He hopes to get a job as an apprentice somewhere, but has had no luck finding a job. He is recruited by two thugs as a patsy to set up and rob wealthy gay men who frequent a particular bar downtown. He decides to quit the business, but the other two make that difficult.

:6510:
445 - A Better Tomorrow (1986) - 6.5/10 - A counterfeiter decides to get out of the business after one last job, but it goes wrong and he ends up in prison. His younger brother has become a police officer and wants nothing to do with his older brother upon his release. There was plenty of action, but the film seemed over the top in a number of places and wasn't as engaging as I hoped.

:710:
446 - Fireworks (1997) - 7/10 - A police officer leaves the force for several reasons and then needs money to pay back the yakuza and to support his family and a close friend. It was okay.

:6510:
447 - Jai Bhim (2021) - 6.5/10 - A woman seeks help from an advocate to find out what happened to her husband who disappeared while in police custody. Police apparently have a habit of arresting and brutalizing members of a particular minority group. The seemingly endless police brutality shown in the film was difficult to watch. There is also plenty of action in the courtroom (and out) as the advocate investigates and counters the police testimony.

:810:
448 - Sherman's March (1985) - 8/10 - A man starts to film a documentary about General Sherman and his March to the Sea, but the film soon changes to a more personal story of the women in his life. He follows Sherman's path and there is discussion about Sherman, but the women are more the focus. We also get humorous narration from the filmmaker. The film also serves as a kind of time capsule to the mid-80s.

:710:
449 - A Bullet for the General (1967) - 7/10 - An American assassin is on board a train when it is robbed by bandits during the Mexican Revolution. He joins the bandits and accompanies them on their crusade. The opening and closing sequences were very good. The middle sections were interesting at times and a bit dull at times as well.

:7510:
450 - A Pistol for Ringo (1965) - 7.5/10 - Ringo is a young gunman who is locked up after killing four men in self defense. A gang of outlaws then rob the bank and terrorize the town before stopping at an estate and holding all of the people there prisoner, including the sheriff's fiancee. The sheriff recruits Ringo to help rescue the hostages. There was more humor than I had expected and it was a fun film to watch.

:810:
451 - And God Said to Cain (1970) - 8/10 - Klaus Kinski stars as a soldier who was falsely imprisoned for 10 years. When he is pardoned, he sets out to get revenge on the man who framed him and those who work for the man. The film has a lot of atmosphere and there is some creativity in how the man goes about the wind-swept town to whittle down the men facing him.

:7510:
452 - Bandidos (1967) - 7.5/10 - Billy Kane and his gang rob a train killing most of the people on board. However, one of the passengers was Billy's mentor, Richard Martin, and Billy lets him live, but ruins his hands for gunfighting first. Later, Martin trains another man with a grudge against Kane in the hopes of getting his revenge. This was pretty good.

:710:
453 - California (1977) - 7/10 - After the Civil War, a man known as California befriends a fellow former soldier and agrees to accompany him on his way home. When the friend is killed, California visit's the family's ranch anyway and becomes close with the friend's sister. It was a decent western with a good finish.

:6510:
454 - Lantana (2001) - 6.5/10 - A police officer with marital problems is letting affect his job performance. A therapist still dealing with the death of her young daughter goes missing. Those and other people's lives intersect in a film that is alternately interesting and somewhat boring.

:6510:
455 - Wolf Creek (2005) - 6.5/10 - A man and two women set out on a road trip through the Australian Outback. Their car breaks down at Wolf Creek National Park with nobody else around. A man in a truck shows up and offers to tow them to his place so that he can fix their car for them. This is the start of their nightmare. It isn't a bad film, though I think I would have liked it a lot more had it stuck to the road trip vibe of the first 10-15 minutes rather than becoming a horror film.

:7510:
456 - The Tracker (2002) - 7.5/10 - Three white men and a native tracker head into the Outback in search of an Aboriginal man accused of killing a white woman. David Gulpilil is very good here as the tracker and the soundtrack is also very good. The journey occupies much of the film and some might see it as excessive, but I enjoyed it.

:6510:
457 - The Overlanders (1946) - 6.5/10 - Fearing a Japanese invasion, Australian ranchers go on a long cattle drive through the Outback to safer pastures. They face a number of dangers and problems along the way. The film is scenic and has its moments, but otherwise the story isn't that compelling very often.

:610:
458 - Morvern Callar (2002) - 6/10 - Morvern wakes up on Christmas morning to find that her boyfriend has committed suicide, leaving behind a suicide note, Christmas presents, an unpublished novel, and so on. Morvern doesn't seem to have much of a visible reaction and tells her friends that he left for another country.

:410:
459 - Django Kill... If You Live, Shoot! (1967)- 4/10 - A group of thieves steal a shipment of gold, but then one faction of the group turns on the other and kills them. However, one of the men who is thought to be dead actually survives and looks for revenge (and the gold) once he recovers. He catches up to them in a strange town at the edge of the desert. This was pretty bad.

:6510:
460 - The Four of the Apocalypse (1975) - 6.5/10 - A gambler is put in jail by the sheriff as soon as he arrives in town. This turns out to be a good thing for him since the casino is attacked by vigilantes that night. The gambler and the other people in the jail are sent out of town the next day and form an unlikely group that bond as they travel through the wilds of Utah. They befriend a group of Quakers and also encounter a vicious bandit.

:710:
461 - The Grand Duel (1972) - 7/10 - A man with a $3000 bounty on his head is holed up and surrounded by bounty hunters when a former sheriff shows up and walks straight into the hiding place to arrest the man. He acknowledges that the man was falsely accused of murder and sets out to aid him in his own way. The pair eventually make it to Saxon City where the three Saxon brothers rule the place. Their father is the one that the man was accused of murdering. Lee Van Cleef does a good job as the former sheriff and the film is generally pretty entertaining.

:610:
462 - If You Meet Sartana Pray for Your Death (1968) - 6/10 - A stagecoach is robbed and the strongbox full of gold is stolen. Somebody has hidden the gold away and several people strive to find it, including a few bad guys and one good guy named Sartana. There's a fair amount of backstabbing and misdirection.

:410:
463 - Alvin Purple (1973) - 4/10 - Alvin has been irresistible to women since he was a teen. He also has a near insatiable appetite for sex. He eventually sees a psychiatrist for his condition and ends up as a sort of sex therapist. I didn't really find this sex comedy all that amusing much of the time.

:410:
464 - Bad Boy Bubby (1993) - 4/10 - Bubby is a 30-something year old who has lived his whole life shut in a squalid home with his mother. She has told him that the air outside is poisonous and can't be survived without a gas mask. Then one day his father visits and it eventually leads him to go outside to explore. I hated the first half hour. It did get better after that, though I still didn't like it very much.

:7510:
465 - Beneath Clouds (2002) - 7.5/10 - A girl whose absent father is white and whose mother and stepfather are indigenous leaves home to go in search of her father. She is joined on the road by an indigenous boy who escaped from a low security prison facility so that he could visit his sick mother. The two are somewhat antagonistic toward each other at first, but slowly bond.

:610:
466 - Johnny Hamlet (1968) - 6/10 - The Spaghetti Western version of Hamlet. Johnny returns home from the Civil War to find that his father has been killed and that his mother has married his uncle. Mix in a Mexican bandit and lost Confederate gold and there you go. I liked the second half more than the first, but am still not much of a fan of the film.

:610:
467 - Light the Fuse... Sartana Is Coming (1970) - 6/10 - Half a million in gold is up for grabs, There is plenty of action, but I didn't enjoy this quite as much as the previous Sartana film that I watched.

:210:
468 - ¡Matalo! (1970) - 2/10 - That was a strange movie, and not in a good way.

:710:
469 - Navajo Joe (1966) - 7/10 - Burt Reynolds stars as the only survivor of a massacre who sets out to get revenge on the gang that was responsible. The movie is decent and the score is good.

:710:
470 - Requiescant (1967) - 7/10 - A young boy is the only survivor of a massacre of Mexican people by a ruthless landowner. The boy is adopted by a pacifist family and becomes close with them. When his adopted sister runs off, he tracks her down and tries to save her from a life of prostitution. He also runs afoul of the same group that killed his people. It's a pretty entertaining film with a good villain.

:610:
471 - Shoot the Living and Pray for the Dead (1971) - 6/10 - A group of outlaws (led by Klaus Kinski) rob a bank and make off with $100,000 in gold bars. A man named John Webb agrees to guide them to the border in exchange for a cut of the gold, but he has his own agenda. I didn't like the first half hour or so, but it got better after that and I liked the end.

:5510:
472 - The Brute and the Beast (1966) - 5.5/10 - Tom Corbett receives a letter asking him to return to his hometown in Texas. When he arrives there, he witnesses a man named Junior kill the son of a family trying to leave town due to low wages. Many of the town residents seem to live in fear of Junior since he and his father control the town along with their gang of hired hands. Tom sets out to find why he was summoned. This was okay, but some of the plot points just seemed to easy or convenient.

:7510:
473 - Black Robe (1991) - 7.5/10 - A Jesuit priest in the 1630s travels with an Algonquin tribe in an effort to convert them to Catholicism. It was pretty scenic and a decent historical drama.

:610:
474 - Cunnamulla (2000)- 6/10 - This documentary looks at residents in the town of Cunnamulla, which is located at the end of the rail line in Queensland. It had a few interesting characters in there, though the film itself was only mildly interesting through much of it.

:810:
475 - Dead Calm (1989) - 8/10 - Sam Neill and Nicole Kidman portray a married couple who lose their young child in an accident. They decide to take a trip on their yacht to get away from civilization and try to recover. They come across a disabled boat with a frantic man who rows aboard (Billy Zane). This is the start of their real troubles. I thought this was pretty good and Nicole Kidman in particular was very good in it.

:610:
476 - Don's Party (1976) - 6/10 - A group of friends with diverse political beliefs gather for a party on the night of an important election in 1969. Lots of drinking and discussion follows, much of it sex related. There's also a fair amount of nudity and sexual behavior. It sounds a bit more interesting than it actually was.

:7510:
477 - Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3 (2023) - 7.5/10 - We learn a lot about Rocket's origins here. I didn't really care for the High Evolutionary as portrayed here - kind of insane and incompetent as well. There was plenty of humor and action and I did enjoy the film. I'd rate it a bit below the first two films in the series.

:610:
478 - Erskineville Kings (1999) - 6/10 - A man named Barky returns home for the first time in many years. He left home due to his father who has recently died. Barky comes into conflict with his older brother Wace (Hugh Jackman in his debut). It was okay, but not really all that interesting.

:510:
479 - Man of Flowers (1983) - 5/10 - A wealthy man is interested in flowers, art, and watching pretty women undress. It's a pretty dull film.

:810:
480 - Muriel's Wedding (1994) - 8/10 - Muriel is socially awkward and finds herself put down by her father and friends. She takes some money and uses it for a tropical vacation where she makes a friend and starts making some changes in her life. The film is offbeat, but generally fun. Toni Collette is good in the lead role.

:610:
481 - Newsfront (1978) - 6/10 - The lives of newsreel cameramen during the 1940s/1950s after WWII. Newsreels are threatened by the coming of TV. The film is okay, though not really all that captivating.

:7510:
482 - Proof (1991) - 7.5/10 - Hugo Weaving stars as Martin, a blind man who takes photographs to document places and people. He later will have other people describe the photographs for him. He befriends a restaurant worker named Andy (Russell Crowe) and this relationship causes jealously in the woman who cleans for Martin and cares for him deeply. It's a pretty good movie. It was interesting seeing Jeffrey Walker as young Martin in flashbacks since I know him from his tv roles.

:410:
483 - Puberty Blues (1981) - 4/10 - Teens cheating on tests, having sex, and surfing. It's pretty dumb.

:510:
484 - Pure S (1975) - 5/10 - Heroin junkies chasing a fix. They don't seem to be very good at it.

:810:
485 - Rabbit-Proof Fence (2002) - 8/10 - In 1931, three Aboriginal girls are taken from their home and sent to a camp for re-education. It's all in their best interests of course. They escape and make their way home by following the rabbit-proof fences in the Outback.

:610:
486 - Romper Stomper (1992) - 6/10 - Russell Crowe portrays the vicious leader of a Neo-Nazi skinhead gang. The gang regularly attacks local Vietnamese residents until the Vietnamese finally get tired of the abuse and attack the gang in large numbers, burning their headquarters and sending some of those who escape on the run. There is plenty of violence and the whole thing felt kind of hollow and underdeveloped.

:710:
487 - Storm Boy (1976) - 7/10 - Mike lives a lonely life with only his father for company. He gathers driftwood and other material that washes up on the shore. One day, he makes friends with an Aboriginal man who also lives a reclusive life and the man nicknames him 'Storm Boy'. Mike is given the opportunity to help raise three young pelicans and this gives him something else to do and be responsible for. It's a decent film.

:7510:
488 - Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953) - 7.5/10 - Lorelei (Marilyn Monroe) and Dorothy (Jane Russell) are showgirls who are best friends. Lorelei likes men for their money while Dorothy likes them for their looks. Lorelei is about to get married in France to the son of a wealthy man, but has to take passage to France separately from the man she is going to marry. Dorothy goes along as chaperone. Russell and Monroe are each very good here and I enjoyed the various musical numbers. The plot is a bit thin, but it doesn't really matter.

:610:
489 - Sunday Too Far Away (1975) - 6/10 - The film follows a sheep shearer and his coworkers at a shearing station in the Outback. It's not bad, but it isn't really all that interesting through much of it. I thought it did get better toward the end, though.

:5510:
490 - Sweetie (1989) - 5.5/10 - Kay is neurotic and superstitious. Her sister Dawn (aka Sweetie) is much worse. Her parents also have their issues. This is supposed to be a comedy, but I found most of the characters more annoying than funny. I did like the second half of the film a bit more, but this is an odd film.

:610:
491 - The Cars That Ate Paris (1974) - 6/10 - A small rural town called Paris survives in part by causing accidents for people who drive through their area and then salvaging what they can from the bodies and the wrecks. One person happens to survive, though he now has a fear of driving in cars. The mayor tries to integrate him into the town. The film is a little slow and odd. It's not bad, but doesn't seem to really go anywhere until near the very end when there is a sort of Death Race 2000 feel to it.

:7510:
492 - The Castle (1997) - 7.5/10 - A man receives notice that the state is using the law to purchase their property whether they agree or not and that they will need to vacate the premises soon. The man takes the case to court to try and stay in their home. The film is a comedy and while it isn't really laugh out loud funny, it was still a decent story and entertaining.

:7510:
493 - The Efficiency Expert (1991) - 7.5/10 - Anthony Hopkins stars as an efficiency expert who is brought in by the owner of a small moccasin factory that seems to be stuck in the past in the way that they do business. He goes about his job to make recommendations to improve the bottom line, but eventually finds himself being affected by the character of the workers. Toni Collette makes her film debut here and Russell Crowe (who seemed to be in about every Australian movie in the 90s) also appears. I enjoyed it.

:710:
494 - The Last Wave (1977) - 7/10 - A moody film about a lawyer who takes the case to defend an Aboriginal man in the death of another. However, the case seems to involve tribal secrets and may be tied to the strange weather that has been occurring recently. The film started off pretty well, but I didn't think it quite fulfilled the early promise and seemed to be stuck in neutral at times.

:6510:
495 - The Odd Angry Shot (1979) - 6.5/10 - The film follows a group of SAS soldiers from the time they leave Australia to spend a year in Vietnam until their return. Their time is filled with long periods of boredom with drinking beer and practical jokes mixed in with brief fights with the enemy forces.

:710:
496 - Long Weekend (1978) - 7/10 - A couple goes off on a camping trip near the beach. The husband is a prick who seems to have no respect for nature - running over a kangaroo, littering in the ocean, chopping trees for no reason, etc. The wife doesn't seem too interested in camping and begs to leave when nature appears to be turning against them, but the husband uses a number of delaying tactics. The film does a good job setting mood with music and camerawork.

:710:
497 - The Proposition (2005) - 7/10 - Three brothers are wanted for the rape and murder of a woman and her family. The two younger brothers are captured and the Captain in charge releases the middle brother and tells him he has to kill his older brother by Christmas or else his younger brother will hang.

:510:
498 - Oh, Susanna (1936) - 5/10 - Gene Autry is heading to visit a friend that he hasn't seen in 15 years when he is robbed and thrown off a train by a wanted bandit. When Autry gets to town, he is arrested by the sheriff who thinks he is the notorious bandit who robbed him. The movie is kind of dumb and the acting isn't all that great, but it is watchable and the music is decent.

:7510:
499 - Across the Wide Missouri (1951) - 7.5/10 - Clark Gable stars as a beaver trapper in the 1830s Northwest. He marries a Native American woman as a means to gain access to their territory, but later falls in love with the woman. There is conflict with a strong warrior who also desires the woman. It was generally fun.

:510:
500 - 'Neath the Arizona Skies (1934) - 5/10 - John Wayne stars as the guardian of a young half-Native American girl whose mother died in childbirth and whose father left before she was born. Oil has been discovered on her mother's land and a gang of bad guys are after the girl in order to grab the claim which is worth $50,000. Wayne also runs across other bad guys along the way. The acting is generally pretty bad, but the story is watchable at least.

:510:
501 - Blue Steel (1934) - 5/10 - John Wayne stars as an undercover U.S. Marshal who is looking into a series of robberies. He just misses the bandit at his latest theft and the local sheriff initially thinks that Wayne is the thief. The two end up stumbling upon a group of bandits attacking a young woman whose father was shot by them and this leads to uncovering a bigger plot by a local landowner. The acting is better than 'Neath the Arizona Skies, but the story isn't as interesting.

502 - To Kill a Man (2014) - 8/10 - A gang of thugs is harassing people in a somewhat poor part of town. Jorge works hard and tries to keep to himself, but he is mugged, his son is shot, and his daughter is assaulted by the leader of the gang and the authorities do very little to stop it. Jorge is left with having to take matters into his own hands to protect his family, but it goes against his nature and affects him as well. It's a good film.

503 - Braindead / Dead Alive (1992) - 7/10 - In 1957, the bite of a Sumatran rat monkey kills Lionel's domineering mother and turns her into a zombie. The infection spreads, slowly at first, turning others into zombies as well in this horror comedy from Peter Jackson. He certainly does go for the blood and guts here. The movie was kind of disgusting at times, but good.

504 - The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith (1978) - 7.5/10 - An Aboriginal man in the late 1890s tries to make a living in the white world. He's hard-working, respectful, and deferential, but finds himself cheated and subject to racial discrimination. He finally snaps and starts striking back at those he perceives as having wronged him. This is based on a true story and is a pretty good historical drama.

505 - El Infierno (2010) - 8.5/10 - Benny Garcia is deported back to Mexico after 20 years in the U.S. He returns to his hometown and finds that his younger brother was a much feared cartel member before being killed years earlier. Drugs and violence are rampant in the area. Benny doesn't have any interest in that life, but is eventually drawn into it by necessity. The film is very violent, but also very good.

506 - Jeremiah Johnson (1972) - 8/10 - After the Mexican War, Jeremiah Johnson (Robert Redford) moves to the mountains of Colorado and looks to take up the life of a hermit. He eventually gains a Native American wife and an adopted son and life seems good. However, he eventually comes into conflict with the Crow and wages a one man war against them. The film is pretty scenic and I enjoyed it.

507 - White Sun of the Desert (1970) - 6/10 - A Red Army soldier is wandering through a desert when he comes across a man buried in the sand. He frees him and continues on his way, later encountering and escorting a group of burqa wearing harem girls who were abandoned by their husband. They end up at an old museum by the sea and have to fight off guerrillas led by the husband of the harem girls. It was a mishmash of different genres and the result was just okay.
