You used to be able to buy years, though they just ended the program a few weeks ago. You could buy up to 5 years toward retirement if you filled out their paperwork and sent them lots of money. I found out about the program from my dad when I started teaching and bought my 5 years when I was 22. I think it was the best investment I ever made.

I plan to take the rest of 2018 off and catch up on things around the house such as comic reading and sorting. I probably will travel some as well. I'll also take some time to figure out what I want to do next. I'm thinking about teaching part time at a university, but don't know how feasible that is or if I really want to do it. I'll check it out, though.

This is the first that I've heard of it. Now that I've googled it, I think it sounds pretty weird.

Merry Christmas, Dave!

We had our family celebration on Saturday since my brother and his wife left for a skiing trip Sunday morning. I went over to my mom's today and we saw The Greatest Showman with Hugh Jackman. It was pretty entertaining.

I was at a party New Year's Eve and on New Year's Day I did a lot of reading, watched Michigan blow their bowl game and checked a few papers.

How about you?

I am in Chicago right now on a 3 day field trip. We are taking 15 of the best students in the school to see Hamilton. I get to miss 3 days of school and see the show for free which is awesome.

When I get back, I will only have about 31 school days left before I retire.

The trip was great. We took Amtrak from Detroit to Chicago and it was a smooth trip. Then we walked to the hotel (which was by the Magnificent Mile) and walked around the area for a few hours.

Wednesday morning started with a program at the theater where 20 or so students from various schools performed songs, raps or read poems that they wrote about historical figures like Thomas Jefferson. The students did a really nice job. Then a few of the actors came on stage and answered questions that students had submitted. Lunch was provided in a nearby hotel and then we went back to see the matinee of Hamilton. Our seats were in the front of the first balcony and they were really good seats. The show was a lot of fun and the kids even got to meet the lady who played Hamilton's wife and got her autograph.

After the show, we split into three groups (one for each chaperone). I treated my kids to Giordano's Pizza and then we did some shopping. The kids got a chance to do more shopping in the morning before we took Amtrak back home in the afternoon. We were back at the school by 7:30pm. The power went out at school on Friday so that day was shortened somewhat too.
